In the days before Google maps the great navigators of the Age of Discovery set sail across the uncharted Atlantic in search of a northwestern sea route from Europe to the Orient.

These explorers suffered cold, famine, scurvy and mutiny to map the coast of America and expand the known world. 

Explorer John Cabot made the first recorded attempt to discover a northwest passage. In 1497 he reached the Eastern shoreline of America spotted with blue herons.
