The Story

The father of polar exploration, Fridtjof Nansen, took to adventure at an early age, becoming the first person to cross Greenland on skis aged 29.

He next set sail in 1893 to conquer the North Pole. Frustrated by the lack of progress after several months of drifting in the ice, he set out on skis with just one companion. After reaching a new record latitude they were forced to turn back.

They survived 2 winters on the ice, fighting off polar bears and celebrating Christmas by washing their underpants. On his return to Norway Nansen was heralded as a national hero.
